IT Fee: Overview 2013–14

How IT Fee helps Penn State support student success

Each year, Penn State’s Information Technology Fee (IT Fee) makes it possible for about 84,000 students at Penn State campuses across Pennsylvania to use technologies that help enable success in and outside of the classroom. From tools for teaching and learning to digital security and expanded wireless Internet across campuses, IT Fee-funded services have a daily impact on the academic, research, and cocurricular pursuits of students.

For fiscal year 2013–14, Penn State collected $40,099,948 in IT Fees to provide IT services to students, allocated as seen in the diagram above.

IT services provided at specific campus locations include location-specific provisioning and support for student computer labs and other student-oriented computing equipment, facilities, and programs.

IT services provided at all locations support such centrally provisioned services—provided through Information Technology Services—as lynda.com, LabChat, WebMail, Penn State Access Accounts, and more.

University library services support the University Libraries' collection of electronic journals, ebooks, databases, digital collections, as well as hardware, software, ScholarSphere, and Knowledge Commons activities in the Libraries.

Networking and security services support community security and telecommunications initiatives at every Penn State campus location.

IT funds are crucial for the University Libraries to support the teaching, learning, and research needs of the Penn State community. Of the fees distributed for University library services, the largest portion (60 percent) funds a significant number of the Libraries' collection of 105,000 electronic journals, 399,334 e-books, 713 databases, and a multitude of digital collections that support scholarship across the University. Another 40 percent of the funds are used to purchase hardware, software, systems, and technology in the classrooms; ScholarSphere services; and Knowledge Commons activities for students throughout Penn State.

The fees distributed to Information Technology Services (ITS), the University’s centrally funded IT unit, are used to support networking, security, and IT services provided at all campus locations. The above diagram is a snapshot of IT Fee use by ITS during the 2013–14 fiscal year.

The remainder of this document highlights some of the services and initiatives supported by ITS using its portion of IT Fee.
